"Olympics Days" at Wade King Elementary School
Location: Wade King Elementary School, Bellingham, WA
Time: Ongoing
WWU's Center for Canadian-American Studies and Department of Physical Education, Health, and Recreation are working with Wade King Elementary School staff to deliver Olympics-related lesson plans across the K-6 curriculum to encourage interest in the Olympic and Paralympic Movements and Vancouver 2010, increase knowledge about Canada and winter sports, build skills according to state EALRs, and instill a sense of confidence and fun with physical activity. Tim Carlson's PE classes will offer Olympics-style activities in collaboration with Dr. Derrick Mears and his students at WWU.

"'Go for the Gold' Assembly" at Wade King Elementary School
Location: Wade King Elementary School, Bellingham, WA
Time: 1:15 pm
Featured speaker and Three-Time Paralympian Donovan Tildesley, who bore Canada’s flag at the 2008 Paralympics in Beijing, won multiple medals in swimming events at the Paralympic Summer Games in Sydney (2000), Athens (2004) and Beijing (2008). He will bring the spirit of the Games to Wade King Elementary School by showing how a young boy — blind since birth — could one day win bronze, silver and gold medals as well as hold world records for the 800m and 1500m freestyle events. Students will learn about values of the Olympic and Paralympic Movements and the importance of goal-setting and striving for excellence in life.

Performance Perspectives of Olympic Athletes
Location: Arntzen Hall 100 (AH100), WWU Campus, Bellingham, WA
Time: 7:00 pm
Featured Speaker: Erin Porter Bembry, US Olympian, Short track speed skater who competed in the 1998 and 2002 Winter Olympic Games, and Donovan Tildesley, Canadian swimmer and multiple medalist who, blind since birth, competed in the past three Summer Games.
Through the personal stories of these remarkable athletes, WWU students and community members will learn about the values of the Olympic and Paralympic Movements, the challenges of world record athleticism, and the importance of striving for excellence in life.

David Buerge, Seattle historian, author and educator will be the keynote speaker: "Native Americans of the Seattle Area" is the topic.
Breakout sessions will include Geography, Duwamish experience, History, Law Related Education, East Asia, and more!
Lunch and 6 clock hours are available.

The Legacy of the Olympic Games: Vancouver 2010

Special Guest: Dr. Ralph Vernacchia, Department of Physical Education, Health, and Recreation, and Director, Center for Performance Excellence
An overview of the critical issues and upcoming events of the 2010 Vancouver Olympics on the Olympic and Paralympic movements, and the future of the Olympic Games. The remarkable life and athleticism of Bellingham's own Franz Gabl, a 1948 silver medalist in the downhill event will be highlighted as an inspiration for all those who engage in the healthy pursuit of athletic and personal excellence.

K-12 STUDY CANADA Workshop
A Journey to the Canadian Arctic
An Interactive and Interdisciplinary Curriculum for K-12 Educators
Location: University of Washington, Seattle, WA
Time: 5:00 pm to 8:00pm
Cost: $25 (includes 3 clock hours, dinner, and resources)
Presenters John Kilbourne, PhD, and Elizabeth Kilbourne are a husband and wife team who have dedicated much of their professional life to studying the Canadian Arctic. In 2001 they moved their family to Iqaluit, Nunavut to experience the Arctic world first-hand. Both are faculty at Grand Valley State University in Allendale, Michigan, and have presented at the annual STUDY CANADA Summer Institute in the past. This workshop is a wonderful opportunity to learn about the life-world of the Inuit and receive numerous curriculum materials, guides and resources that assist development of interactive and interdisciplinary lesson plans for use in K-12 classrooms.

All World language teachers are encouraged to attend as well as present workshops.

- Earn 3 quarter credits (C/AM 410 - WWU) or 40 clock hours as you learn about British Columbia, Canada, and the Olympic tradition in a comfortable classroom setting from government officials, tribal leaders, and university faculty.
- Banish stereotypes and meet real Canadians while exploring two of Canada's most beautiful, cosmopolitan and environmentally sustainable cities.
- Experience Canada's culture, history and environment during an urban walking tour of Vancouver, a historical carriage tour through Stanley Park, a visit to the Squamish Nation Longhouse, a tour of the Squamish Lil'wat Cultural Centre, and a Tree Trek ecotour on foot or by zipline in Whistler.
- Witness the legacies of the 2010 Winter Olympic Games through site tours and presentations.
- Receive useful resources daily that help bring Canada to your classroom.
- Return home with lesson plans on Canada that meet NCSS standards

Summer Institute for K-12 Professionals
"Québec Dimensions: Geographic, Historical and Cultural Explorations"
The Northeast National Resource Center on Canada invites social studies, geography, history and French teachers to spend a week in the province of Québec, Canada. This professional development opportunity will provide participants with a comprehensive overview of the six elements of geography, historical foundations, and contemporary cultural insights through first-hand experience in the province of Québec.
Itinerary: June 27-28 in Montréal; June 29-30 in Québec City; July 1-2 in Montréal
Registration Fee: $649
Credit: PDP/Clock Hour Certificate for 45 contact hours.
The Institute may be taken for graduate credit.
Registration Deadline: May 5, 2010.
The Institute begins and ends in Montréal with travel to Québec City. Participants will:
- Gain current curriculum materials and resources to aid in teaching
- Receive briefings by specialists in Québec geography, history, and culture

Visit key sites relevant to Québec geography, history and culture:
- walking tours and museums in Québec and Montréal
- Ile d’Orléans, Montmorency Falls, & Ste-Anne-de-Beaupré
- Apply new knowledge to a collaborative unit that meets state and national geography and social studies standards.
