Summer Institute for K-12 Professionals Québec 1608-2008

"Samuel de Champlain and the Meeting of Two Worlds: 1601-1701"

In 2008, the spotlight will shine on Quebec City, the cradle of French civilization in the New World, as a year of celebratory events commemorates the 1608 founding of what is now the provincial capital. The spotlight will also shine on individuals central to its origin 400 years ago - notable, French cartographer and Quebec's first governor, Samuel de Champlain. This Institute examines Champlain's two worlds.

Beginning and ending in Montreal, with travel to Quebec City, this Institute brings participants first-hand experience with sites and artifacts from the evolving French colonization of North America. At one point, Québec City was at the center of New France - an empire that extended from the Gulf of St Lawrence to the Great Lakes, and from Hudson Bay to the Gulf of Mexico.

By exploring several themes, the Institute offers participants an opportunity to compare and contrast the contact experience from the two world views of the French and of the First Nations.

For registration, itinerary and other details please visit the Summer Institute for Teachers of French web page.
